Why the blog?

Long time passes ...
Version 1.0 (2013)
Well, I have sat on this idea for over a year and things never quite panned out. And here I am now … hopefully at a place that I can use my words for good. As my wife will tell you, I can talk and talk. A LOT. However, I am on a never-ending quest to learn how to save my words for when they are actually needed. I have found that writing is a good way to focus my thoughts, ideas and ramblings. My wife is quite wonderful at this and she helps me edit, too. English teachers are good that way.
I started this blog as a way to support and promote public education. I am a strong believer in public education for ALL students. Public schools are essential to communities, the economy, and the health of young students (both developmentally and psychologically). An effective school provides students with opportunities to develop and nurture knowledge, skills, creativity, compassion, tolerance, and respect.
Another reason that I started this blog was to stay actively involved in the (democratic) process of educating our students. I do believe in content standards, laws, rules, and guidelines for schools, fair evaluation of educators, strong parent support, and community involvement as ways to help schools and students become successful. There is no one “correct way” to reach students and help them achieve success; there are many. Public schools are NOT perfect, but they do offer a wonderful place for student learning, provided that those involved are willing to work together for the good of the students. I also believe in standing up for what is right – for students, for schools, for our future.
I do not believe in sitting back and awaiting mandates to be handed down, dictating the “best” ways to educate students, especially from those who have never spent a day in a classroom or understand what it means to educate a child. I do not believe in following the same path, day after day, year after year with the hope of achieving different (and more effective) results. This does not work in any field, especially not in education.
I believe that positive change comes from honest conversation, hard work, and engagement. In order to provide for a more successful learning environment for our students, we must all be willing to do the work, raise our voices, and work together.
My hope is that I will find myself posting content that is timely, relevant, and supportive of education, schools, and students. I encourage you to be a part of that.
